Does the feeling of confusion have a positive or negative impact on learning?
Positive. Consciously thinking about all our activities is exhausting, therefore our brains operate on autopilot, especially when we think we are familiar with a task. Therefore, to learn something, we need to be engaged in it and actively think about it. Confusion triggers our brain to make sense of what we are trying to learn. This is thanks to our brains’ constant drive to find meaning (patterns) in the world we live in. Therefore, when our brains get confused, our body releases dopamine, which makes our brains pay close attention. At this stage, our brain is ready to learn. Good training makes the most of this situation by creating a good level of confusion and providing new information at the right time. It is noteworthy that too much confusion and confusion which lasts too long could create frustration and/or a lack of motivation resulting in a lower learning rate.
